The Tragedy of Oradour

Oradour sur Glan, is a French village, located 23 km north-west of Limoges. Oradour, like neighbouring Tulle, like Lidice in Czechoslovakia and Marzabotto in Italy, became a symbol of propaganda for military victors of World War II the defeated German armed forces.

All these townships are united by one thing, that without confirming the facts, without any scientific research, their history was presented in an absolutely false light.

June 6, 1944, the Normandy landings took place. Two days later, on June 8, 44, the 2nd SS-division Reich received an order to redeploy in order to clear the road from partisans and ensure the advancement of German troops. The following day, there was heavy fighting in Tulle against the partisans.

On the evening of June 9, Helmut Kempfe, commander of the 3rd motorised infantry regiment Der Führer, as part of the tank division Das Reich, was captured by partisans. The next morning, two Frenchmen informed the Germans that a high-ranking officer was in captivity in Oradour occupied by Maquisards and fellow-fighters, Communist partisans. The partisans announced that the captive was to be executed and then burned.

The German side tried to resolve this issue by diplomatic means. The offer was to release 30 captured partisans, pay a bounty of 40,000 francs in exchange for their captured commander and other prisoners held by the partisans.

Sturmbannfuhrer Adolph Dieckmann received an order with his 1st battalion to move in the direction of Oradour and to bring captive Maquisards and offer an exchange. This exchange of partisans was not accepted.

The Germans encountered resistance in Oradour and found the bodies of several executed German soldiers. In one burnt out ambulance six corpses were found, the driver and the passenger were tied to the steering column. This was told after the war, a French officer. A German ambulance driver was also killed, which, as is known, was not armed and was protected by the International Red Cross.

The men in this village were separated from the women and children who were gathered in the church. The men were confined to the barns so that they could be easily guarded by several soldiers.

At this point, troops of the Waffen SS began searching houses and found a great many weapons. At they did so, there was a terrifying explosion in the centre of the village. Women and children in the church were in fact victims of hidden ammunition exploded there. These arms caches had been secreted by members of the resistance movement.  The reason this was never investigated is because such would have proved conclusively that the explosion was caused by munitions unavailable to the German troops. In fact, the German troops set about the task of rescuing women and children from the burning church.

It is known that 642 inhabitants were killed by explosions and in the ensuing firefight. The houses in which there were weapons and explosives caches were later destroyed by SS units. These actions are not illegal and were carried out under the command of Adolf Dieckmann.

In the absence of radio communications, Dieckmann was forced to act and make independent decisions. An investigation was initiated. The military court of the Das Reich Division interrogated Major Adolf Dieckmann and other soldiers.

Due to the fact that the Normandy landings were taking place, the inquiry was temporarily suspended. Major Dieckmann was one of the first to be thrown into defensive battles.

According to French eyewitnesses, the Germans did not set fire to and shoot women and children trying to escape, on the contrary, they risked their lives to save stricken women and children from the burning church.

In December 1963, a Lieutenant Colonel Mathess of the Bundeswehr in military uniform visited Oradur. Many residents who survived the tragedy of June 9 embraced him and thanked for their salvation. It was remembered with gratitude that it was the German military who had rescued them. Such is on record.

The killing of Sturmbannfuhrer Kempfe in Oradour by the partisans was particularly cruel as the evidence showed. The French government, although it was friendly to the post-war German government, opposed requests to exhume the body of Kempfe, as is required by the Hague Treaty. To this day, the church has not been restored and traces of those military events in it have been preserved. However, France does not intend to issue investigative acts in the Oradour case.

Those who are trying to reach the truth, like the Frenchman Vincent Reynouard, author of The Truth About Oradour, suffered and was expelled from work as a teacher.

World War II, which was declared by the French on September 3, 1939, and continued by partisans, was illegal, broke the terms of the non-aggression pact and was in defiance of the Geneva Convention.

The military propaganda of yesterday and today is so ingrained; it has become an integral part of history. To this day there is a whole series of episodes in which local settlements with population were destroyed by member nations of the Allies, as in Algeria, Indochina, Lebanon. Not a single one is known a case where an international tribunal would have investigated these killings, as was done in Nuremberg. CREDIT: Otto Weidinger.

NOTE: In context, it might also be remembered that without any provocation the post-war Czech government razed over 500 German villages.  ‘These hundreds of villages, clearly identified on pre-1939 maps, no longer exist. ‘The official Czech register of names of villages reveals that nearly 500 (German) villages no longer appear on the register because they have literally disappeared from the landscape.’ – Verfall und Zerstoerung der Sudetendeutschen, Munich, 1965. 1. I read an article about Oradour in the nineties. It was almost identical to your piece. Could Vincent Raynouard be the author? The Wehrmacht has been accused of so many ridiculous crimes, they become laughable. And, it wasn’t just the Soviet atrocities blamed on the Germans but hundreds of American and British atrocities as well. But, when the publishing world and the Media is run by the ‘left-handed non-members of the Church of Scotland,’ what can we expect to be different. Just an extra little note: A friend of my fathers who fought in the Italian campaign said the German prisoners he met were more like us Canadians than any other people in Europe. He had fought beside the Poles and the French and felt foreign to them, but not the Germans. I always remembered him saying that and was never quite sure what he meant.

    • ‘The lies will one day break down under their own weight and we will stand as pure and undefiled as ever.’ ~ Dr Joseph Goebbels. Yes, when I was a lad (late 1950s and early 60s), most of my sailor colleagues and many ex-soldiers had personal experiences of Germans ~ in captivity too. I can honestly say that I never ever heard any ex-serviceman speak badly of their captors. Mike

  2. Mike I remember the opening scenes of one of the final episodes of the world at War .This was released in 1973. The Germans came into the town of Oradour and for no reason at all killed all the inhabitants and razed it to the ground. There was no context at all to what actually happened beforehand.

The same story was tried with the German ZDF series on the SS. There was no historical explanation, just the evil SS rocked into town one day in 1944 and gunned down everybody, then burned the town to the ground.

No wonder revisionist historians have had such a hard time correcting these lies.

    • As Joseph Kennedy once said to a friend, according to Michael Collins Piper ‘we lost the second world war.’ When he said we, he meant the Gentile European people.

  3. I do agree with all the ideas you have presented in your post. They’re really convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for starters. Could you please extend them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.
