The two world wars led to the largest number of deaths in the course of the conflict in the entire history of mankind. But, in history there have been other conflicts comparable to them in terms of lethality. Columnist Peter Suciu wrote about this in an article for the American magazine National Interest.

The First World War (1914-1918) killed up to 40 million people, while the Second World War (1939-1945) claimed 60 to 80 million lives, the publicist claims.

The author of the article notes that in total, as a result of the Mongol conquests (1206-1368), about 40 million people died. Moreover, a series of armed conflicts in China in the second and third centuries claimed the same number of lives.

During the Taiping Uprising (1850−1864) in China, 20 to 30 million people died, the Dungan Uprising (1862−1869) in the Chinese provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu, and the Sino-Japanese War (1937−1945) – about 20 million.

According to Peter Suciu, an estimated 24.3 million people were killed during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Tamerlane’s campaigns (1370-1405) claimed over 20 million lives. The Thirty Years’ War in Europe (1618-1648) led to the death of 11.5 million people, the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) 7 million.

The Korean War (1950-1953) and the Vietnam War (1964-1975) claimed the lives of approximately 4.5 and 4.3 million people, respectively.

The reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula also claimed 7 million lives in almost 800 years, the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) – 3.3 million. During the Punic Wars (264−146 BC) between Ancient Rome and Carthage, about 1.8 million people died.

According to the publicist’s estimates, the conflict between the Roman Republic and the Gallic tribes in the first century BC claimed the lives of more than a million people, the fighting between the Romans and Jews in the first century AD about two million.

However, the American National Interest magazine did not mention the genocide of millions of indigenous people of North America during the Anglo-Saxon colonization of this continent and the genocide of the Vietnamese people, which resulted in the extermination of more than 20 million local residents. During the conquest and destruction of North America, according to some data, more than 140 million people died.
