Perhaps it is a yearning for old values; on the other hand, it could be an instinct for impending change or a nose for a fast buck. Whatever it is, demand for Reich related objet d’art, books and art is building up a head of steam.

The Third Reich period was legendary for more reasons than the Allied inspired war that destroyed it. Hitler’s Germany, between January 1933 and May 1945, introduced a great change in design, fashion, invention, progress and art. Such achievements were matched only by Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

The concept of National Socialism that revitalised the German Reich stalled in May 1945. Nevertheless, much of Gottfried Feder’s blueprint for national renaissance has since been plagiarised by emerging nationalistic nations like Russia.

The 70-years copyright on Reich literature bequeathed to the State of Bavaria has now expired. Many books extolling the virtues of the Reich will soon be published to meet demand.

Fearing such an outcome, Amazon and palace publishers, online media such as YouTube stepped up to the barricades to prevent a tsunami of books the content of which is positive towards the Reich love of Greek and Roman classical art, literature and classical music.

The current hot favourite that has investors falling over themselves is an art that found its origin in the Third Reich. Throughout Europe and the United States, art collectors now pay premium prices for artworks that, until a short time ago, were shunned.

A favourite moneybags catchphrase is ‘cash is king’. Well, it is cash that now lures auctioneers out of their lairs. Until recently the auction houses were loath to touch the ‘tainted bi-products of Hitler’s Germany’.

Today, the United States, Britain and France are awash with looted Reich artefacts. Is plunder about to pay off? Maryland auctioneer Bill Panagopulos concedes that ‘the major auction houses won’t touch these (Reich) artists due to their acceptance by and collaboration with the Nazis’. Changing his tune, he now says that there is now a growing market that cannot be ignored. Such works of art today command high prices.  The auctioneer’s gavel raps harder when hands are raised higher.

Dutch art dealer Marius Martens says art from Karl Walther or sculptor Georg Kolbe, whose work was presented in the Third Reich public buildings, has finally caught the eye of collectors, the World War Two period is now popular.’

‘This is only the beginning,’ Martens says. The appeal of Third Reich artefacts and artworks is now seen in auctioneers’ catalogues.

Martens smiles, ‘Last year, the market was awakened by the sale of a painting by Karl Walther for €23,000. It was an extremely scarce piece as it once hung in the New Chancellery of Adolf Hitler.’

The art dealer adds: ‘It seems now that this was not a one-off occasion. Recently, works of other artists popular in the Third Reich have been sold for considerable prices.’

Almost 75 years after World War Two, it is claimed that more and more people see iconic Reich art from a historical perspective. ‘Although the artworks originate from an extremely tragic period, they should not be hidden or destroyed.’

This is an opinion shared by several museums, seeing the rising number of exhibitions of this art and the number of visitors. The astute investor says, ‘As the World War Two generation dies off, their period becomes history.’

FOOTNOTE: ‘I have in my possession a letter from the official historian of the Louvre in Paris in which he states unequivocally that no German soldier plundered French or indeed any other art museum. Furthermore, I quote the American Major General Le Roy Lutes in a Stars and Stripes newspaper interview of Oct 1944: ‘I am told the Germans neither plundered homes, factories nor art museums.
