A South African doctor who found the new variant states the symptoms are similar to a cold and mild, and the UK is overreacting to the finding. The new Omicron variant of the coronavirus results in mild disease, without prominent symptoms, Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, told Sputnik on Saturday 27 November 2021.

The doctor who found Omicron claims that symptoms are extremely mild and that the United Kingdom is panicking unnecessarily.

After two instances of Omicron were discovered in the UK, the UK government announced the reinstatement of masks in stores and on public transportation, as well as additional travel restrictions. Some scientists are concerned that Omicron, which was initially discovered in Botswana, might be more infectious than other variations and resistant to vaccinations.

However, Dr Angelique Coetzee, chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, believes the UK is overreacting and that the symptoms are extremely mild. She initially detected the variation in a guy in his early 30s who was weary and had a slight headache, she told the Andrew Marr Show.

‘What we are seeing clinically in South Africa, and remember I’m at the epicentre, that’s where I’m practising, it’s extremely mild,’ Dr Coetzee added. ‘For us, that’s mild cases.’

‘I think you already have it there in your country, and you’re not knowing it,’ she replied when asked whether the UK was panicking unnecessarily. At this stage, I would say definitely.’

Two instances of the new type were verified on Saturday in Nottingham and Essex. At a news conference on Saturday, Boris Johnson stated that masks would be restored in stores and on public transportation and that all visitors to the UK will be required to undergo a PCR test on their second day in the country.

Those who tested positive for Covid-19 will be required to isolate for a period of 10 days.

Sajid Javid, the health minister, said on Sunday that the new mask-wearing guidelines would take effect on Tuesday. ‘I hope this is something that we can remove within weeks,’ he added of facial coverings. ‘But I do think in terms of making progress, we want life to go back towards normal, but at this point in time, given what we know about this variant and the expert advice that has been received, I think it is right to take some proportionate and balanced action.’
