In the Inequality Kills report, experts examined the period from March 2020 to November 2021. According to Gabriela Bucher, chief executive of Oxfam International, the ten richest people now have ‘six times the wealth of the poorest 3.1 billion people.’ The organization’s report says that if they spent $1 million a day, it would take the richest people 414 years to spend their fortune.

During the same time, the income of 99% of people on the planet has decreased. More than 160 million people were below the poverty line.

In the European Union and the UK, the wealth of billionaires has increased by €642 billion (+46%) since the start of the pandemic. Now the 107 richest people in Western Europe own more wealth (€1,377 billion) than 179 million citizens (€1,374 billion), Oxfam analysts say.

‘Inequality at this pace and scale is by choice, not by accident. Our economic structures have not only made us all vulnerable to the pandemic but are actively allowing those who are already extremely wealthy and powerful to exploit this crisis for their own benefit,’ Bucher said.

To change the situation, experts propose to heavily tax the capital of the richest people and the most profitable companies, invest these funds in health and social protection, abandon intellectual property rules on COVID-19 vaccine technologies, establish stricter legal standards to protect workers and others.
