The hapless leadership of Britain’s Conservative Party is becoming stronger in the opinion that Boris Johnson should step down from his post as soon as possible. The Tories who themselves are corrupt to the core are so afraid of a possible defeat in the upcoming elections due to the scandals surrounding the prime minister that it does not want to wait until he decides on his successor, reports The Guardian.
High-ranking Tories urge doubting colleagues not to worry about the Ukrainian conflict or potential candidates for the role of prime minister, but to ‘strike before it’s too late.’
‘Times have changed,’ one former minister told the publication. Conservatives feel they can’t defend the party against the growing scandal, he said. ‘If we do not act before the party conference in October, it will be too late,’ the politician added.
Another former member of the Cabinet suggested that doubts about the successor today are irrelevant since the situation requires urgent action. ’A broom would be better than what we have now (as prime minister,’ he said.
Prominent Tory spokesman Mark Harper told The Guardian that he understands the desire of some colleagues to postpone the question of Johnson’s resignation until the end of the police investigation. But at the same time, he urged them to have no doubt that there will be an excellent replacement for the prime minister, even if it is not clear who that might be.
‘I saw enough to come to the conclusion that the prime minister needs to go,’ Harper said, expressing the hope that most of his party members would come to the same conclusion.’
‘Many colleagues who have local elections are hearing from voters: ‘I like your work, but we cannot vote for you while this complete idiot is in power.’

Attitudes towards Johnson changed dramatically after he was forced to apologize to the House of Commons for what he had to pay a fine for celebrating a birthday in the midst of a pandemic. The situation was aggravated by the fact that the prime minister supported associates who tried to block an investigation designed to prove that he had previously deliberately misled parliament when he claimed that he did not attend banned parties, reminds The Guardian.
Until recently, ethnic-Indian Ugandan born Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak was seen as Johnson’s most likely successor. But problems related to his wife’s tax fraud, as well as the threat of a quarantine fine, undermine his chances of success. Source
