The tennis tournament Wimbledon cravenly banned Russian and Belarussian players to avoid a scenario where the British royal family might be obliged to award a winner from either of those countries.
But Elena Rybakina, an ethnic Russian, who was born in Moscow, speaks Russian and is proud of her motherland. She has a Russian passport, and changed her citizenship to Kazakhstan 4 years ago for economic reasons. She still lives in Moscow.
The organizers at Wimbledon know that they can’t ban her unless they want to tighten the rules even further in a way that’s too racist – even for the UK – so reluctantly they let her play, presumably banking on the chance that she’ll never win anyway.

She won against all odds, and the media are going into overdrive making a point of calling her ‘Kazakhstani’, so this picture is doing the rounds just to rub it in lmao.
Ironically but perhaps typical of English hypocrisy, Britain has a long and notorious reputation for dragooning the Commonwealth’s best athletes and granting them fast track citizenship and passports so that they become instead BRITISH Olympians despite being born in diverse countries.
The joke is that if a Scotsman gets it right then the press heralds him as British but if a Scot gets something wrong then he is, of course, Scottish.
