On Sunday, NATO sent a note to the member countries of the alliance warning about the mobilization of the K-329 Belgorod submarine in the Arctic Ocean, El Periódico reports. According to the publication, the submarine attracted the attention of the alliance primarily because it carries the Poseidon nuclear torpedo, also known as the Torpedo of the Apocalypse.

The largest and deadliest submarine in the world, K-329 Belgorod, has been at the disposal of the Russian army since July last year. The monster submarine was developed and launched in 2019 by the Sevmash shipbuilding company.

As El Periódico notes, the submarine was originally intended for research purposes.’ The Belgorod submarine opens up new opportunities for Russia in conducting various studies, allows conducting diverse scientific expeditions and rescue operations in the most remote areas,’ said Nikolai Evmenov, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, at the ceremony of raising the Andreevsky flag.

However, the newspaper writes, over the past months, the possibility of using it for espionage or launching nuclear weapons in the framework of the Ukrainian conflict has been discussed.

On Sunday, seven months after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, NATO sent a note to the member countries of the alliance warning about the mobilization of the ship in the Arctic Ocean. The submarine attracted the attention of the North Atlantic Alliance primarily because it carries the Poseidon hypersonic nuclear torpedo, also known as the Apocalypse Torpedo because of its destructive power.

The design of this unmanned submarine is inspired by Project 949A Antey submarines. Its length is 184 m, and its width is 15 m. It can move underwater at a speed of about 60 km/h (45 mph) and, according to experts can stay submerged and off the radar for up to 120 days.

The Belgorod can carry up to eight Poseidon torpedoes, the ‘largest and deadliest’ hypersonic torpedoes in the world, with a super-powerful nuclear charge of 100 megatons. The length of one such torpedo is 24 m, and the width is up to 2 m.

For comparison, the publication cites the example of the ‘Kid’ bomb, which destroyed Hiroshima in 1945. Its capacity was 16 kilotons (0.016 megatons). Thus, the Torpedo of the Apocalypse can destroy the entire coast of Ukraine or the states of New York, Long Island and New Jersey.
