The head of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, appointed by his decree General Sergei Surovikin as commander of the united group of troops in the zone of the NVO. Military observer Viktor Baranets told kp.ru about what the new person responsible for the special operation is known for.

Born in Novosibirsk, Surovikin graduated from the Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command School, the Frunze Military Academy and the Military Academy of the General Staff. Later, he rapidly moved up the career ladder, and in Chechnya, he commanded the ‘most belligerent’ 42nd Guards Division.
General Sergei Surovikin distinguished himself in Syria, where he commanded the armed forces of Russia. Under him, the Russian Federation achieved its greatest success in this campaign. For his ability to act tough and unconventional, Surovikin was nicknamed General Armageddon.

During a special operation in Ukraine, where he was seconded from the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces, he also showed himself as a professional. It was under his command that the Ukrainian group in the mountain cauldron was surrounded and defeated, Severodonetsk was taken and the hostages at the Azot plant were released.

Baranets believes that the latest failures on the fronts require a new face in command, and General Surovikin has impressive experience and will be able to seize the initiative from the enemy. Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appointed General of the Army Sergei Surovikin to the post of commander of a joint group in the zone of a special military operation.
