Algeria, a nation that dominates North Africa appears to have fallen off NATO’s radar in recent years. The alliance, still gloating over the destruction of Gaddafi’s oil-rich but rebellious Libya ~ is likely busy counting the gold bars their political bosses seized, Algeria has seemingly sneaked in unobserved.

Having learnt from the NATO destruction of Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, and Somalia, the political statesmen of Algeria are eager to ally themselves with Russia to avoid the wrath of the North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO).

Algeria has earmarked 20% of its 2023 budget, or $22 billion, for the military, most of which is expected to go towards weapons, equipment and missiles, Atalayar said. The amount allocated for defence is more than double the amount of last year, which indicates the instability of the situation in the North African region, the newspaper writes.

In this context, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboun is considering the possibility of concluding arms contracts with Moscow in the amount of $12 billion to $17 billion.

‘Today, with an increase in the budget for weapons and rising tensions with Morocco, Tebbun sees Russia as an asset that can make his country stronger,’ the article notes. The agreements that Algeria wants to sign with Moscow will include the acquisition of modern defence systems, aircraft and warships. 

As the newspaper recalls, back in November last year, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtan Lamamra told Sputnik that the two countries ’have a broad cooperation program, and … Algeria and Russia are important to each other.’

The Russian ambassador to Algeria also noted that the two countries are looking forward to ‘important events’ and strive to ’strengthen partnership in the fields of energy, mining, manufacturing and scientific research.’ 

However, agreements in the strategic sphere are not the only thing that unites the two countries, the newspaper writes. As noted by the Moroccan media, ’Algeria’s desire to join the BRICS organization, whose members are already Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa, is looming on the horizon.’
