If it is confirmed that the doyens of American mainstream media have received money to spin published news, US democracy will be ‘in the dustbin of history,’ says Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

She recalled Fox News data, according to which financier George Soros over the years ‘paid big money to 54 influential media figures, including journalists, reporters, TV hosts and bosses of CNN, NBC, CBS, Bloomberg, NPR and Washington Post.’

It is specified that Soros spent at least $131 million on profitable media coverage.

‘For the US, such a statement is a nuclear explosion. If it is proved that the leading American mainstream media received money for correcting (spinning the news) the presentation of information, then all democracy in the States is wrapped in their Constitution and thrown into the dustbin of history, ‘ said Zakharova.

The diplomat stressed that it was Washington that had always insisted that the freedom and independence of the media is the basis of democracy in the state.

Earlier it was reported that the US Congress intends to allocate $ 884.7 million to the US government Agency for Global Media as part of the budget for the fiscal year 2023 through the State Department. Part of the funds will go to counter Russia in the information sphere in the countries of Eastern Europe.

A study by the Associated Press’s Media Insight Project showed that only 6 per cent of Americans had a great deal of trust in the mainstream news. The United States ranks last in media trust among 92,000 news consumers surveyed in 46 countries. Only 29 per cent of American respondents said they trust the news, compared to 54 per cent in Brazil and 39 per cent in Indonesia. ~ Sputnik International June 26, 2021.
