I suppose it is only natural that those in the public eye consider their biographies to be of interest to us lesser mortals. No doubt many have led colourful and exciting lives, especially those whose careers were in travel or entertainment.

In my experience, the most readable life stories are those of ordinary men and women. Often and unexpectedly such people were cast by fate into extraordinary situations. Having read and written the biographies of many ordinary but extraordinary people I can vouch for their being far more interesting than kings, queens, celebrities and politicians.

We tend to take people like us for granted but how differently we would view outwardly ordinary people if everyone wore a ‘magic jacket.’ Printed on the back of each jacket is a photomontage that reveals their most important life experiences.

We would see men who had faced death in battle and nurses who had given much to others. The elderly lady at the checkout; I imagine she might have been a doctor or globetrotting journalist.

I see an ageing road sweeper who, as a young man, wore the uniform of his country. He was quite prepared to give his life for his nation’s liberty. Over there I see the fetching middle-aged lady who in her twenties was very much a sports icon.

Passing the time of day with an elderly man I see he was once a sea captain. As his wife turns and I study the photomontage on the back of her coat I see a cabaret artiste.

Life would be much more interesting if we were to have printed even one image of what we looked like when young. Nothing pleases me more than to receive social media likes and comments when I post a picture of myself as a dashing 16-year-old sailor.

I was, of course, a handsome young devil and with an open shirt I sure made the ladies go weak at the knees. Alas, this is no longer the case, which is just as well as I am now happily married.

I have many friends who are also getting on in years. Change is inevitable for us all but I gasp when I see ageing friends as they once were. Marilyn Monroe, and Brigitte Bardot, eat your hearts out. My neighbours, Jennifer and Jean, were far more attractive. Furthermore, their lives were much more interesting.
