SANCTIONS BACKFIRE: In Britain, a country that fed itself during World War II, supermarkets, and fruit and vegetable stands in supermarkets are empty. According to NTD, food shortages have forced chains to impose restrictions on the number of goods dispensed per person. This has become a problem not only for consumers but also for the food industry, whose survival depends on easy access to products.

In British supermarkets, fruit and vegetable stands are empty. Food shortages have forced chains to impose limits on the number of goods sold per person.

Now it is difficult to find tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and other products in the store. This is not only a problem for consumers, but also for food businesses that depend on easy access to food for survival. The shortage forced chef Enzo Oliveri to change his restaurant’s menu.

ENZO OLIVERI, Chef: ‘The shortage forced us to change the tomato-based sauces to white sauces. What else is there to do as we desperately need to earn to survive.’

For suppliers, the shortage did not come as a surprise. They were prepared for this against the backdrop of rising energy prices related to the sanction applied again top fertilizer and energy producer Russia.

TONY MONTALBANO, director of Green Acre Salads: We talked about this a year ago. But few responded. We are talking about this again only because now you see empty shelves.

According to experts, the increase in the cost of heating huge greenhouses has led to a shortage. However, it is connected not only with the energy crisis. Bad weather in Spain and Morocco affected salad exports. At the same time, British farmers were unable to fill the resulting gaps.

Entrepreneurs say farming in the UK is in decline as retailers chase lower prices and opt to import.

JED FUTTER, Former Supermarket Owner:  Apple farmers don’t buy plants or expand orchards, so there won’t be enough apples at some point. They cannot afford it because they are given low prices.

The government and supermarket owners are working to eliminate the shortage. But while the shelves in many stores remain empty.

      • Yes I understand all that, but if you write ‘According to NTD’, is that a physical newspaper or something or can you put a link in the article? Let’s not forget the alternative media has been screaming food shortages for more than a year now with no real shortages as yet occuring.
