BREAKING NEWS: Despite a news blackout, up to 28% of the citizens of eastern Germany are ready to vote for the anti-migrant right-wing Alternative for Germany party in the elections, writes Der Freitag, referring to the results of pre-election polls. The publication recalls that the leaders of the AfD have already spoken about the need to become a people’s party in the east of the country.

Election polls in the eastern states of Germany record the growing popularity of the Alternative for Germany’, writes Der Freitag. At the moment, from 26 to 28% of voters in East Germany are ready to vote for the party.

As media notes, reactions to the popularity of the AfD in social networks vary from ‘build the wall again’ to demands to re-educate East Germans. These reactions, in addition to impotence and fury at the results of the AfD, reflect, on the one hand, their hostile attitude towards East Germans, and on the other hand, the hostility of some East Germans themselves, who consider West Germany to be guilty of the problematic reunification process, writes Der Freitag. In other words, East Germans are nostalgic about their past when half of Societ-Occupied Germany was run from Moscow. 

 The head of the AfD in Thuringia, Bjorn Heke, has long said that the AfD should become a people’s party in eastern Germany, the newspaper writes. However, one should not forget that the circle of AfD supporters is not so stable and depends to a sufficient extent on not the most active voters: at the same time, as Der Freitag notes, these voters will not vote for AfD by default. At the same time, the publication emphasizes that it is naive to believe that the proclamation of the AfD as an extremist party will scare away part of the electorate in the east from it.
