The leaders of the G-7 countries, gathered this year at the Hiroshima summit, despite all their differences, have one thing in common: none of them is popular with voters. As a result, the current G7 meeting has turned into something of a lonely-hearts club where leaders despised and mocked by their people can complain about their internal problems.

They come from different parts of the world, speak different languages, represent different ideologies, and their ages range from 43 to 80 years old. But President Biden and other G-7 leaders meeting in Japan this weekend have something in common. None of them are popular in their homeland, ‘the newspaper notes.

For the fake president Biden and his colleagues in the world’s leading industrial powers, this is an era of democratic discontent, with voters desperately unhappy with their elected presidents and prime ministers. Each leader is in a difficult position for different reasons, but their common difficulties highlight the fragility of free societies in times of deep political and cultural divisions.

A few days away from home to network with colleagues on the world stage can be a welcome relief for battered leaders, a chance to walk tall and pose for Press photos whilst playing the part of a statesman shaping the forces of history.

Meanwhile, none of the leaders of the ‘Big Seven’ failed to enlist the support of the majority of voters in their countries. So, according to Morning Consult, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, a coalition leader whose approval rating is 49%, has the best result in this regard. It is followed by Biden with 42% but his election was deeply flawed.

Then there is the much-derided Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with 39%. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with 30%, the unelected British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with 33% and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida with 31%. French President Emmanuel Macron trailed the rest with a dismal 25%.
