Is your image on Wheels?

BUSINESS MATTERS: Remember when you are going about your business in your firm’s signed vehicle your business will be judged on your driving.

We all have our faults and there have been occasions when my lack of courtesy left much to be desired. Fortunately for my business, the only clue as to my identity was my number plate.

I was young and headstrong on two occasions when I allowed myself to be goaded by fellow drivers. These resulted in two madcap road races that might have come straight from the movie, Bullet, in which Steve McQueen starred. Sadly, for me, in both instances, my rivals were plain-clothed policemen.

Stuff happens. The first time the cops complimented me on my dexterity at the wheel. On a second occasion, the pursuing cop handed me a ticket.

None of us is perfect but it pays to be seen to be faultless when you are driving your firm’s vehicle. This is especially so when the vehicle’s livery includes full contact details of the company you work for. Drive carefully or it might be the company you once worked for.

Road rage invariably causes an irate response. Your outraged victim might not be satisfied with merely giving you the finger.

He might use this finger on his laptop’s keyboard to give your boss the finger too. Furthermore, the last thing you need is to see your failings as a driver discussed on social media and this does happen.

When driving, especially when driving a signed-up vehicle, it is your golden opportunity to be an ambassador for your company.

Impeccable manners when behind the wheel might bring you more than a smile. You could be the lucky winner of a complimentary letter to your boss. Better still; a new customer may be keen to know the company whose road manners are deserving of his or her patronage. Mind how you go, sir.
