Lack of space means I have difficulty cataloguing the massive ‘off the radar’ British Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) purchasing blunders of recent times. If these ‘blunders’ were to happen to a registered company the tax inspectors, anti-corruption squad, receivers and others charged with rooting out financial malpractice would be all over the bought ledger books like a rash.

The weakness of democracy is there is no accountability. This is left to the electorate. Certainly, there are so-called watchdogs but they are either toothless or they are part of the scam. The National Audit Office (NAO) comes to mind. They the members of its directorate are appointed by those they are charged with investigating and unaccountable to trusting souls who naively troop to the ballot boxes every few years. Don’t forget to bring your wallets and purses.

FOLLOW US AND NEVER MISS AN IMPORTANT STORY AGAIN

Recently the MOD spent £1.7 million of the British taxpayer’s hard-earned on an out-of-court settlement to a furniture company; a cancelled order. It spent a similar amount on helmets and body armour for Ugandan soldiers. At this stage, I would have sent in that section of New Scotland Yard whose task it is to investigate possible misconduct. They are not the only ones who Teflon-coated get away with blunders. A Royal Navy skipper shipwrecked his £1 billion nuclear submarine. For recovery and repair the taxpayers splashed out £2.4 million. Carry on up the Khyber. Nearly £2 million was shelled out when a warhead hit the wrong target; someone else’s building.

Clearly, it isn’t only the Indian subcontinent that has its untouchables. An unnamed MOD spokesman said: ‘As we acknowledged to the National Audit Office, the MOD has not managed its resources well for many years.’ Yes, it seems that way but carry on as you were, chaps. In total more than £400 million was the cost of blunders from scrapping aeroplane contracts, accidents, and judicial disputes if the previous years ‘misjudgements’ are taken into account. I can almost hear you sigh with relief; ‘is that it?’

Not quite. The early withdrawal of Harrier fighter jets and the cancellation of a fleet of Nimrod planes dug a trench in the accounts deep enough to sink a submarine in. If you really want to know the cost was £54 billion. I advise against working out the cost to each of Britain’s taxpayers. Don’t go there. Let us fall back on a synopsis of defence department catastrophes. There was a bill for £256,000 after a vehicle was destroyed in a fire; obviously, it was not not a family saloon. Three cancelled building contracts cost £564,000. In total more than £6.5 billion has been written off for military equipment the MOD no longer needs.

If I were a policeman, I think I might be minded to enquire into the bank accounts and lifestyles of those responsible for placing the Ministry of Defence orders. But that is just a hunch mind you; just a hunch. By the way, the projected losses for the coming year amount to £12 billion. Mind how you go, sir.
