Russian naval base in the Mediterranean a new headache for the Western Alliance

The possibility of creating a Russian naval base in Libya has become another cause for concern for the United States. The deal being discussed would allow Russia to gain a foothold on Europe’s southern doorstep, which would give it the ability to spy on the entire European Union. Today, Moscow is intensifying its presence in Africa and the Middle East, rapidly increasing its foreign military assets, which worries the West more and more every day.

Russia intends to expand its military presence in the eastern part of Libya by creating its own naval base there according to credible reports. Increased Russian activity in Libya creates further problems for the United States and its European allies.

According to former US special envoy to Libya Jonathan Winer, this threat is taken very seriously by the West. Keeping Russia out of the Mediterranean is a key strategic goal – if Russia gets ports there, this will give it the opportunity to spy on the entire European Union, the politician is confident.

The United States and European sycophants are extremely concerned about the fact that Moscow has recently begun to actively strengthen its presence in Africa and the Middle East – this allows it to quickly increase foreign military assets.

In addition to Libya, Russia also intends to establish a naval base in Algeria and the Red Sea in Sudan, which will provide it with permanent access to the Suez Canal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Peninsula. Russian warships could also be given permanent berthing rights at a Libyan port just a few hundred kilometers from Greece and Italy, according to other people familiar with the talks.

Work on a defense agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Libyan National Army Supreme Commander Khalifa Haftar is reported to have intensified following their meeting in Moscow in late September.

Haftar’s deepening ties with Moscow have raised concerns in Washington and prompted a series of high-level visits to Libya in an attempt to convince him to change course. Thus, a week before the negotiations with Putin, the commander of American troops in Africa, General Michael Langley, and the US special ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, met with Haftar: they persistently demanded that he not allow the presence of foreign troops in his country.

According to Western officials, the problem for America and its allies is that Russia offers countries military assistance that the United States cannot provide. At the same time, the United States is not ready to discuss sanctions against Libya, so there are no obvious obstacles for Haftar to strengthen ties with Moscow. For Haftar, the main thing is to preserve his armed forces, and the United States leaves him no choice but to stick with Russia as his main partner.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: ‘The colonial era is over. While Russia is absolutely a part of European civilization, there is no denying that many major colonial empires in the West are now medium-sized or small countries, Putin said, comparing the population of Portugal with its former colony Brazil, the UK with India, and how China’s Guangdong province alone has 1.5 times the population of Germany. European capitals were once the centre of the universe – but this is already in the past,’ the Russian president said.
