Favorite Dilan Ješilgöz-Zegerius conceded defeat after a surge of votes in the final days of the campaign allowed Wilders’ anti-EU party to overtake his main rivals.

According to initial estimates, Wilders’ Freedom Party will gain 37 seats and more than double its representation compared to the previous parliament, 12 seats ahead of its nearest rival. As the publication notes, only once in the modern history of the Netherlands the leader of the largest party did not become prime minister.

Wilders’ victory is a clear challenge to the European Union project in one of the bloc’s six founding countries. It comes as the world holds its breath in anticipation of Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency after next year’s elections.

Wilders promised voters a legally binding referendum on leaving the EU and condemned the bloc’s policies on issues such as climate change and immigration. ‘The Dutch expect to take back their country,’ Wilders commented on the exit poll.

His chances of leading the next government will depend on whether he can forge an alliance with rivals closer to the center. In his post-election speech, Wilders called for a coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, which was until recently led by outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Thus, Wilders made it clear that he was ready for joint governance of the country.

The Dutch election campaign showed how immigration has divided voters and strengthened support for Wilders, for whom the issue has been a core issue for decades. The 60-year-old politician is known for his anti-Islamic attacks and has lived under police protection since 2004 due to death threats.

Victory came from faith and dogged perseverance. As with all anti-liberal parties and organizations including political parties, Geert’ Wilders party and supporters have been severely censored by Facebook and the mainstream media.

If Wilders ends up leading the next Dutch government, a Eurosceptic will come to power in one of the union’s most staunch countries. Wilders called on the Netherlands to abandon international climate commitments and demanded that aid to Ukraine be curtailed. BE A CITIZEN JOURNALIST BY POSTING OUR STORIES ON SOCIAL MEDIA
