In a stark warning of what is yet to come, demonstrations in major European cities escalated into clashes with police.

Protests took place in scores of major European Union cities, which escalated into often vicious clashes with state police. In particular, Berlin, London, Brussels, Zurich and Paris were turned into war zones. 

Most of the anti-government demonstrations took place on the occasion of Labour Day but there are mounting side issues. Repression is the pivotal point upon which diverging ideologies converge into a solid anti-repression front.

In London, activists came out against the new police law, and in Brussels, residents protested against tightening restrictions due to COVID-19. In the British capital, protests were held demanding that the government cancel the adoption of the law, which will massively expand the powers of the ‘Big Brother’ police. May Day demonstrations took place in Berlin, Turin, Zurich and Paris, and action against toughening coronavirus measures was held in Brussels.

According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, May Day demonstrations took place throughout Germany, but clashes with the police occurred only in Berlin. ’There were violent clashes between the demonstrators and the police,’ the newspaper writes. According to her, the protesters threw stones and bottles at the police, and also set fire to garbage containers and pallets.

In response, the regime’s police forces used special equipment. As a result of the riots, several people were arrested; three police officers and at least two demonstrators were injured.

More than 5,000 people marched through central London demanding to cancel the police empowerment initiative. The march ended in a park in the south of London, where the demonstrators ‘entered into battle’ with the police. The police said that nine people were arrested.

More than 1,000 people gathered in the Bois de la Cambre park in Brussels, who demanded that the restrictions claimed to spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus ~ but increase profits for investors. The protesters chanted ‘Freedom’ and threw eggs at law enforcement officers. 

To disperse the protesters, the police used a water cannon, pepper gas and batons. According to RTBF, at least 10 people were injured during the dispersal of the protesters. One person was injured several times with the hooves from a police horse.

May Day demonstrations in Paris also ended in riots, Le Monde reports. They were attended by representatives of trade union and youth organizations, representatives of left and right, patriotic and globalist as well as supporters of the ‘yellow vest’ movement. At first, the procession was peaceful, but later the demonstrators began throwing pyrotechnics, stones and bottles at the police. In response, law enforcement officers used tear gas and water cannons.

According to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen, 34 people were detained during the demonstration in Paris. According to the General Confederation of Labor, an impressive 150,000 people took part in demonstrations across France, and 35,000 in Paris. Le Parisien writes that during the riots in the French capital, 21 people were injured, of whom four were seriously injured.

Several Labor Day processions were held simultaneously in Zurich. The press service of the city police said that the demonstrators threw fireworks and bottles at law enforcement officers. In response, the police used rubber bullets to disperse uncoordinated actions. The police said that three people were detained. No casualties were reported.
