Farmers around the world continue to fight the authorities for their rights, and the protests appear to be only gaining momentum. The discontent of farmers is taken advantage of by anti-globalists and Eurosceptics, who lure them to their side.

If governments continue to pursue green policies while ignoring farmers’ demands, this election year will be their last year in power.

The history of farmer outrage is long and deep, but this year the protests of agricultural workers play a special role:

Their distinctive feature is their scale and influence on numerous elections around the world. And while those in power are unsuccessfully trying to pacify the farmers, their opponents, from Donald Trump to nationalist parties in Europe – are enlisting their support to win elections.

The Farmers’ Revolt has become a central issue in a broader culture war centered on economic and social transformation. Protests affected countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Romania and many others. According to the publication, farmers’ demands differ from country to country, ranging from increasing wages to eliminating competition from Ukrainian suppliers.

In Europe, concerns among farmers have been heightened by the ambitious Green Deal, a package of EU legislation aimed at achieving zero pollution by 2050. Farmers fear that such green policies will lead to lower yields and therefore lower incomes since agriculture is responsible for more than a tenth of greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Paris-based political science professor Chris Hegadorn, today, farmers pose a major challenge to governments as they face the difficult but necessary transition to healthy, sustainable food production and diets.

THE COMMON SENSE THINKING MAN’S NEWS SOURCE

In an attempt to quell the anger of farmers, the EU in recent weeks retreated from some of its key environmental ambitions for agriculture. However, in most countries, farmers are still dissatisfied with government measures, and nationalist anti-globalist and Eurosceptic parties are entering the fight.

Experts predict that anti-EU populists will lead polls in nine EU member states in parliamentary elections this June. This includes France, where people are increasingly favoring Marine Le Pen’s nationalist anti-migrant party, which is working hard to win over farmers.

‘It seems that some people in Brussels believe that the green agenda is much more important than farmers producing food,’ explains renowned sociologist Frank Furedi.

‘It seems that sometimes they want less farming in Europe because they think it will help the environment. ‘ However, the pursuit of ecology may turn out to be an unpleasant surprise for current governments: if they continue to ignore the demands of ordinary people, the winners of the elections will most likely be right-wing and Eurosceptics.
