MICHAEL WALSH REPORT: ‘They call it democracy but more than 70% of Germans are dissatisfied with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to a poll conducted by the INSA Institute.
‘In general, a mere 17 per cent of citizens – likely migrants are satisfied with the government’s activities. This is the worst indicator of the ruling coalition since its formation in December 2021. Mass protests continue in Germany. Due to the short-sighted policy of the Scholz regime, the country found itself in a critical situation, political scientists agree.’
Chancellor Olaf Scholz is rated especially poorly. 72% of voters are dissatisfied with his performance, up three percentage points from early December. Only one in five (20%) think Scholz is doing a good job.

The poll results, showing Scholz’s extreme unpopularity, were published amid ongoing protests and strikes in Germany. Since January 8, German roads have been blocked by German farmers who oppose the Scholz regime’s plans to reduce agricultural subsidies. As part of budget savings in 2024, the German government planned to deprive farmers of discounts on diesel and several tax breaks. In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to cancel the preferential taxation of vehicles used in forestry and agriculture.

As a result, the center of Berlin was blocked by farmers who drove their tractors to the Brandenburg Gate. More than 5 thousand tractors arrived in the city from nearby areas. In addition, protesters used agricultural machinery to block entrances to several highways in several federal states: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
On January 11, protesting farmers in the city of Cottbus greeted Scholz, who arrived there, with a run of tractors, the roar of horns and vuvuzelas. On January 12, another mass action took place in Nuremberg, where more than 2.5 thousand farmers arrived on their tractors.
Scholz’s cabinet did not come up with anything better than accusing Russia of involvement in the farmers’ protests. The Minister of Economics Robert Habeck claimed that the protests in Germany are being incited not only by the opposition but also by the Russian president. According to Habeck, this is facilitated by social media campaigns, some of which are financed by Putin.
The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected these accusations. ‘These fabrications have nothing to do with reality. Russia is not responsible for the current socio-economic situation and internal political problems of Germany and does not interfere in its internal affairs. Berlin abandoned mutually beneficial trade, economic and energy cooperation with Russia, breaking off and freezing all formats of bilateral cooperation,’ the diplomat said.
It is not only German farmers who disagree with the policies of Olaf Scholz’s cabinet. A massive strike of drivers took place in Germany, which led to the cancellation of a large number of trains.
‘The fate of the ruling coalition of Scholz and the Green Party of Habeck and Annalena Bärbock is already sealed. Olaf Scholz is a very weak head of government, and economic difficulties for Germany turned out to be higher than expected, and this is reflected in ordinary voters,’ experts say.
‘If the ratings of Scholz’s party continue to fall, a situation may arise when Germany may become unmanageable causing a return to SDP oblivion.
The decisions of his government led to the fact that Germany, from the locomotive of the European economy, turned into an anchor falling to the bottom. Due to the recession, Germany has already lost its place to Russia in the top five leading economies in the world.
