Contrary to the propaganda of the victors of World War II the National Socialist German Workers Party in January 1933 was democratically elected to govern Germany. Within the month, the Party’s leader Adolf Hitler publicly vowed to the German people that within four years he would give the German electorate the opportunity to decide if they wished the NSDAP to continue to govern Germany or wished instead to return to the electoral system of the Weimar Republic.

The Flying Enterprise story of Man vs. the Sea

During Christmas Week, 1951, began an incredible sea story involving a WWII era cargo vessel named the Flying Enterprise and her captain, Kurt Carlsen.  Captain Carlsen was a Danish-born seaman that began his sea career at the age of 14. He became master of his first ship at the age of 22 with the Danish-American company American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines which was a New York-based US-flag shipping company from 1919 to 1977, offering both cargo and passenger ship services. In 1977 it declared bankruptcy and was acquired by Farrell Lines.

Born in 1929, Belgian national Jean Schramme had little need to travel to the Congo Republic. As manager of a vast estate in the Belgian Congo, Schramme was already a Congo national during the Congo Crisis (1960 – 1965). The setting to his contribution was the scene of the unrest following the breakaway of mineral-rich Katanga and Kasai Provinces.
