In classic fairy tales, there is not enough diversity in characters: the main characters are blue-eyed and fair-haired, the villains are old, love happens at first sight, and the princess, when she sees the prince, immediately takes him for a man and refers to him with a masculine pronoun. According to the Daily Mail, this worries experts at Ladybird Books, who have decided to rewrite fairy tales in the spirit of modern trends.

The British publishing house Ladybird Books decided to check some children’s fairy tales for compliance with the trends and realities of modern life. They publish such classic tales as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty but their characters and plots have been deemed outdated or harmful, writes the Daily Mail.

According to experts, the problem is that among the characters there is no proper diversity. Most of them are blonde and blue-eyed. In addition, analysts talk about class discrimination due to the social status of princes and princesses, ageism because villains are usually old, and a lack of racial diversity among the main characters.

Also, ‘love at first sight’, when the characters fall in love with each other, even before they speak, can fall under censorship. The problem here is that these images can instil in children that good looks alone make someone worthy of attention and romance.

Among other things, the experts raised the issue of gender pronouns. For example, in a situation where a princess uses the term ‘man’ when meeting a prince for the first time when they do not yet know each other, experts advise giving preference to gender-neutral language. At the same time, self-styled analysts are confident that such ‘normalization’ will not harm the narrative.

Earlier, the publishing house has already begun to rewrite the books of Roald Dahl in a more modern manner, reminds the Daily Mail. In particular, in the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ the words ‘hag’ and ‘fat’ in relation to the hero were removed, replacing them with ‘huge’.
