According to Björn Höcke, a prominent member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, “We raised our children as sheep and brought wolves into the country.”

It is a flagship remark the truth of which sums up the sentiment of the increasingly frustrated German electorate. Furthermore, the desire for change is increasingly echoed throughout the European Union. It explains an election-by-election rightist revolution currently taking place in the bloc’s most powerful nations.

Following a groundbreaking electoral breakthrough, Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) candidate Robert Sesselmann gained the second round of elections in Sonneberg, Thuringia. The ruling political class reacted with extreme alarm and followed through with various threats about the democratic results of recent elections heavily in favor of the AfD.

Schleswig-Holstein SPD member of the Bundestag Ralf Stegner claimed the election had similarities with the Third Reich, writing, “Ninety years after the seizure of power and the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship, the district of Sonneberg in southern Thuringia elected a right-wing extremist as district administrator.”

Sesselmann became the first politician from the party to hold a district leadership post. The win is being touted as a historic victory for the party described by media as ‘far-right’. The European right-wing parties are experiencing record support from voters and routinely polling between 19 and 20 per cent in nationwide surveys.

Robert Sesselmann defeated the incumbent CDU candidate Jürgen Köpper by a convincing margin. Preliminary election results show Sesselmann with 52.8 per cent of the vote and Köpper trailing with 47.2 per cent.

The win comes despite a fortress coalition of Greens, Free Democrats (FDP), the Left party, and the Social Democrats (SPD) that endorsed the CDU candidate and urged voters to back him against the AfD. The German press also made the election a national issue, warning of a ‘threat against democracy’ should the AfD win.

Far from being a one-issue party, the AfD candidate promised voters that he would tackle high inflation and the growing problem of immigration, the negative effect of arming Ukraine, sanctions and a green-based economy.

In polls, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has overtaken the chancellor’s ruling party, the SPD. The populist party is likely to repeat its victory this year in the important states of Thuringia, Brandenburg and Saxony. If elections were held throughout the EU this year the ruling left coalitions may well be overwhelmed – and they know it.

German newspaper Junge Freiheit describes the triumph as a ‘political earthquake.’ The political left in harmony with left-wing-oriented media reacted with concern, intimidation and threats. Green party leader Ricarda Lang called the result of the district election disturbing. “All democratic forces must defend democracy together.”

Far from being an isolated case in Europe, the swing towards the popular parties of Italy, France, Greece and Spain finds common ground with right-wing rebellious states such as Hungary, Austria, Poland and Slovakia. Combined, these right-wing governments are quick to take advantage of their growing clout in the various parliaments of the splintering European Union.

The ideological mentor of Europe’s surging right is Viktor Orbán. The Hungarian Prime Minister says, “The European Union was created for two reasons. The first is peace – and now there is war. The second is prosperity yet the economy is in an increasingly worrying state. That is why the so-called protest parties are gaining strength everywhere in Europe. I’m not talking about Germany alone, I’m talking about Europe in general,” Orbán added.

In the recent parliamentary elections in Greece, nationalist parties dubbed ‘far right’ by liberal media managed to win almost 13% of the vote. Liberals say the success of the ‘radicals’, which is also seen in many other parts of the EU, could have a profound political effect and push moderate political forces to take more extreme steps such as repression in order to maintain popularity.

Spain’s triumphant Vox MEP and vice-chair of the ECR Group Hermann Tertsch calls for a conservative Reconquista not only in his own country but also in the whole Western world. He explains how essential it is for conservatives from Europe and both Americas to join forces against the progressive agenda and put an end to the social engineering going on in the European Union and elsewhere.

Headed for the general election on July 23, Spain is likely to be the next European country after Sweden, Finland and Italy, where a right-wing, sovereigntist, anti-mass immigration party is in government. Spanish polls indicate a populist Popular Party-VOX coalition at 48.8 per cent with the left coalition straggling at 39.9 per cent.  

In a move that would have serious implications for the future of democracy in Germany, the municipal election victory of an Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician in Sonneberg is now being reviewed to see whether the newly elected administrator is “suitable for democracy.”

Despite the stunning victory of the election, Sesselman may never be able to actually serve in office. “The election result may be retroactively reversed,” according to a report from Welt.

The latest “check” is coming at a time when every candidate is checked for eligibility to run for office before every election, which Sesselmann already passed. However, the government of Thuringia is conducting yet another check on the AfD candidate, with many experts fearing that this check will reverse the democratic outcome.
