The 60^th anniversary of apportioning of overrun Germany was followed by the sickening division of what was once Europe’s greatest city by the West and the Soviet Union. Mainstream media having earlier praised to the heavens the Stalinist Soviet Union pirouetted. The media – for a naïve public, appeared hostile to their former allies to whom they had handed 21 European nations to as recently as 1945.

How ironic when the same swallow anything British and the citizens of the West had been told the war was all about protecting Poland’s independence. Poland too was handed over to the Soviet Red Army in 1945. Until August 13, 1961the people of the Divided City of Berlin were still able to move around freely in the city. That is, until August 13, 1961.

Brandenburg Gate Closed was the headline used by the Associated Press (AP) news agency in the early hours of August 13, 1961, to announce a truly horrifying crucifixion of a betrayed and defenceless people; the beginning of the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Built along the dividing line of the USSR and their Capitalist saviours, the notorious wall now became a symbol of oppression and division. East Germany’s Kremlin-controlled National People’s Army (NVA) and construction crews were deployed to cut off all access routes to West Berlin, initially in most locations with barbed wire. 

Erich Honecker, later to become East Germany’s leader, was at the head of ‘Operation Secure the Border.’ The aim: to literally cement the division of Berlin. That was quickly followed by the construction of a steel and concrete perimeter wall with a forbidding height of just short of 3.5 meters (12 feet) that surrounded the whole of West Berlin.

The aim was to prevent the haemorrhage of people fleeing the ‘Workers Paradise’.  At least 2.6 million people had already done so since its founding in 1949. They sought better lives across the border in West Germany, which was officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG).

The mass exodus from East Germany had pushed it close to collapse. There were not enough doctors, not enough skilled workers. To prevent the situation from deteriorating further, the country’s leaders concluded that there was just one solution: turn the Soviet Occupied Zone of Berlin into a prison.

According to East German propaganda, the Wall was not designed to keep people in; rather, to keep people out: ‘We can only continue to live in peace if we put a stop to the activities of West German revanchists.’ 

The danger of a third world war and possible nuclear conflict was always a profit-making illusion. The pretend rivalry and sparring were useful for turning the United States into the most militarily powerful country in the world, soon capable of colonised much of the world. In fact, the United States had 1,050 vast military bases situated around the world; this was divided into the Soviet and Western interest regions. Just as Europe had been divided by the Allies now the world was to be divided.

The Cold War or rather the Phony War would only really come to an end with the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, 28 years after it was erected. Only then did post-Communist Russia has become a real money-making foe.

During the 28 years that it cast its shadow over the city, over 200 men, women and children lost their lives along the Wall. Their fate is today commemorated at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, where a 200-meter section of the wall has been preserved. People from around the world come to this site to try and grasp what it all means. Not much point in reading the newspapers, watching TV or listening to the radio to better understand the infamy of those who ignited a true MEGACAUST. Source
